New York April 19 J Bruce Ismay head of the International Mercantile Marine Company is summoned to appear as a witness before the senate investigating committee Senator Smith of Michigan says the public will learn the Titanic disaster facts He notes witnesses who are ill may testify and cites Major Butt and Colonel Astor saluting as the last boat was lowered He states no American man jostled a woman in the wreck chaos.
Charles W. Meighan, who served as editor for nine months, sent his resignation to publisher G. A. Robbins to take effect immediately. City editor Floyd Schumaker, in his role for the past two months, also suspended work today. No immediate plans are announced.
J Bruce Ismay testifies before a Senate Commerce subcommittee at the Waldorf Astoria denying Titanic was speeding and stating he slept through the crash. He says he warned no one about speed and that no explosion occurred as the vessel sank. He also denies dining with Captain Smith or censoring Carpathia messages.
L Beasley of London, Cambridge man, describes calm aboard Titanic as lifeboats were prepared and filled. He recalls orderly gathering on deck, women and children boarded first, men moved to starboard boats, and crews lowering boats amid drifting exhaust and mounting danger without evident panic.
Archibald Butt and John Jacob Astor hailed as brave figures in wake of the disaster. President Taft praised Butt as loyal and courageous, while records note Butt and Astor aiding women and directing others as the ship sank. Titanic wireless operator John George Philips died at his post sending SOS calls.
New York April 19 The Carpathia which arrived last night with 745 Titanic survivors is being prepared to resume its voyage to the Mediterranean. All survivors even those ill have been taken off. Customs officers gently assisted reunions as families gathered at the pier in alphabetic sections to ease the landing.
