London April 17 General Maurice announced a fierce battle as British forces press a wide front southward from Metterner. Germans are driven back on a broad area yet the overall situation remains unclear with incomplete front control and ongoing combat.
The American Army in France awarded war crosses to Douglas Campbell of California and Alan Winslow for downing two German planes. Campbell’s pilot skill helped cripple the Bockhe plane, which fell in flames. Winslow, age 22, also contributed to the victory.
Hourton April 17 two airplane crashes at Ellington field claim the lives of Second Lieutenant Roeland J. Winterton South Bowton Cadet Forest Dean Jones Worcester Muse and Second Lieutenant Lea Nugent Washturn Iowa. Cadet Maurier is seriously injured.
Portland April 17 With appointment yesterday of four fire lieutenants for the Oregon State Police battalion being recruited by Major Richard Delch, the commissioned personnel of the organization has been completed. Major Delch appointed J We Koeker of Condan general under of Salem and Walter F. Threlkeld of Portland as lieutenants. Robk er will be second in command of the eastern Oregon company. Campbell and Threlkeld will be attached to the Fortie and companies commanded respectively by Captain Ray H. Dottie and Captain L. Keienen. Captain Harry F. Williams will command the eastern Oregon company and after the muster may establish headquarters at Pendleton. Captain John Uber the fifth captain in the battalion will take his full post. The four appointed are veterans of other American war. Keeler was a member of the Twentieth Kansas Volunteers in the War of 1812 and later served with the regulars in the Dover uprising and the Chinese relief expedition. Leutenant Campier will retire after serving as major in the Oregon guard to accept the commission.
