News from Constantinople reports that General Tzett Fuad and assistant minister Ed hem Pasha were murdered last night by soldiers. English and German residents are among the victims. Names of two Americans and a missionary slain at Adana have not been learned.
In Seattle on April 17 a bank robber entered the American Savings Trust in the business district at 11 AM and threatened a teller. The teller ducked under the counter, the robber fired at secretary Harry Welty but missed. The bullet narrowly missed bank president Jabez P. Gleason as the gunman fled into a crowd.
The Cudahy Packing Company of Kansas City was indicted by a federal grand jury in Topeka Kansas on 737 counts accusing whole sale violations of internal revenue laws. The company allegedly defrauded the government of over 80000 dollars in oleomargarine revenues. Maximum fines could total over 700000 dollars if convicted.
Livingston Montana April 17 The Hawkeye Elevator Company of Minnesota has purchased a wheat ranch near here and will erect a grain elevator. The land contains seven thousand acres.
In Dayton Washington the potato market stalls with prices at 20 per hundredweight. Dealers forecast a downturn before month’s end as seed potatoes sell today for 2.26 per unit, a record quotation for several seasons.
In San Francisco on April 17 J A Thompson was shot in his office during a revolver fight with thugs aiming to rob a $2300 bank cash sack. An assailant, Francis Gorman, an ex convict, was captured after a citizen posse. a second accomplice escaped.
Everett Washington April 17 George A Clark a blacksmith near Woodsville nearly insane after finding his child in a pool of water by the shop. He thought the form a doll and was horrified. The five year old girl reportedly waded in, stumbled and could not rise.
Seattle April 17 engineer Jomes J. Turner of the Northern Pacific road lies unconscious at Emergency hospital. He was crushed under his own locomotive yesterday and must live the rest of his life without either arm after the needed amputation.
Chicago April 17 James Patten wheat king claims Wall Street influences Washington against grain speculation and asserts he has no role in price regulation. He says public opinion credits Wall Street heat for market shifts while scarcity stems from control. Secretary Wilson counters with hand on wheat stocks and notes large past year production.
Vancouver April 17 British Columbia lumber prices will advance soon as conference members of the British Columbia Lumber and Shingle Manufacturers association warned of rising demand from the Canadian northwest and prepared price increases.
Montie A. Gwinn announces a wool contract of 186000 pounds with Malheur Livestock Co at 20 cents per pound. Nearby Montana sales show Thea Bros. agreeing to 60万 pounds at 23 to 25 cents. Charles Barrett receives 22 cents but seeks 24. Chicago warehouse plan gains traction among eastern sheepmen and predicts 30 million pounds shipped this season.
Secretary Ballinger orders restore 264000 acres of semi arid land withdrawn from entry in Wyoming and Montana. Two parcels totaling 200000 acres lie in the Lander and Buffalo districts of Wyoming and 14660 acres in the Cheyenne district of the North Platte project. A 19000 acres tract in the Kalispell district of Montana was withdrawn for water conservation. Land is restored as government interest no longer requires withdrawal, aligning with a policy favoring development alongside conservation.
Seattle on April 17 following coroner Snyder investigation into the death of Mrs Wanda Kalem. Kalem husband Henry Kalem and John Kalem of Kalem Investment Co Seattle held on suspicion with Mrs John Kalem and one daughter arrested. Coroner doubts suicide. says Kalem threatened wife and she carried a five thousand dollar policy. Blend stains on ranch house doorsteps blamed on dog fight. Kalem moved to ranch after selling Seattle lodging house.
A Edmonton dispatch says Indians at Fort Chippewa are starving due to fur crop failure. Many are described as skeletons and huddled in tepees, with death looming from hunger. Authorities warn of a growing humanitarian distress amid harsh conditions.
Washington report says James J. All of Great Northern and allies pressed for tariff reform to boost national prosperity. He warned that unresolved tariff issues threaten business and urged a plan to settle the matter, while accompanying officials and regional business reps discuss a national tour of Japanese visitors.
President Taft met for two hours with the executive council of the American Federation of Labor led by Samuel Gompers in the White House. They discussed the anti injunction eight hour laws convict labor Panama canal child labor and government contracts. Taft promised further consultation and urged congressional support for enforcement and extensions of labor protections.
Portland Ore April 17 Portland has 34472 registered voters. The grand total shown by registration books balanced after the close last night. Since the books were last open prior to the presidential election 1464 new voters registered with the county clerk. Of these 1464 new voters 1044 were Republican 219 Democratic and 107 miscellaneous. During the last month 1664 voters registered or changed residence within the city since the last election.
Port Blakely Washington April 17 Two men are believed to have lost their lives on the Bound near restoration Point yesterday. The canoe to Bugle harbor was found bottom up and a sack marked U.S. containing blankets. The men were caught in a heavy squall.
The first installment of the Japanese display for Seattle exposition arrived this morning. Ten men travel to handle the exhibit and set up the large display during the event.
George M. Kelley of this city had the middle finger of his left hand grafted to his face after an accidental nose loss. Surgeons at the University of California hospital reported bone knitting after weeks of fixation, then amputated the finger near the hand.
Salem Oregon April 17 Circuit Judge Thomas A McBride accepted the appointment to the supreme bench. He will serve until January 1 1911. The terms of Justices Moore King McBride and Slater expire January 1 1911. Four justices will be elected in November 1910 with three serving six years and one four years.
President Taft plans a summer coast trip from August 1 leaving Washington to Beverly Mass for June and July. If Congress approves twenty five thousand dollars the trip will include Alaska and a visit to the Seattle fair and the Spokane irrigation congress making him the first president to reach Alaska by rail and sea.
San Francisco reports Professor F C Simm of the Chicago Museum of Natural History will board the Japanese steamer Chiyo Maru on Friday to take up the work of Dr William Jones, killed by natives in the Philippines weeks ago. Simm plans to stay nearly a year and proceed to the area of Jones’s death, driven by the museum’s interests.
Liverpool April 17. The world's margin of visible supply has practically disappeared according to a statement from the largest wheat men on the continent. They report greatly reduced European acreage due to adverse weather and foresee enormous prices. Bread is expected to become a luxury in England. Grain men say Patten in Chicago is not responsible for the present condition.
Simon Hubig president of the National Association of Master Bakers sent letters to Ohio congressmen urging action to prevent wheat cornering. He condemns wheat gambling in Chicago and calls flour a necessity, urging protection of the public against gambling.
Washington April 17 F C Good of Spokane is here with representatives of the chamber of commerce of Seattle Portland and Tacoma to arrange the Itinerary of 10 prominent Japanese who will come in September. They plan to have them taken across the continent by special train to look into industrial conditions in an endeavor to cement commercial unity between the countries. They will call on President Taft tomorrow. They hope to obtain conclusions from the Interstate Commerce Commission as to special train privileges.
Portland, Ore. April 17 reports from the weather bureau warn of a possible June flood rivaling 1844 if warm weather fails to arrive. Snowpack includes 193 inches at 7000 feet in Yellowstone’s Snake River area and 130 inches in nearby canyons, risking a sudden flood from a hot spell down the Snake and Columbia rivers.
Pendleton Academy will hold its commencement on May 26 with four graduates receiving diplomas. Valedictorian is Miss Rossjie Grace Porter, with speakers including Joe Albert Porter and Cort Clark Yates. The program details indicate a joint service with Pendleton High School and an annual alumni tongue on May 28.
