Surrounded by rebels, Huerta's northern remnant makes a desperate stand at Benavides station near San Pedro. Jim Honder the Greek convicted Tuesday of a crime against nature is this morning sentenced to the state penitentiary for not less than one year nor more than fifteen. The evidence was revolting and Judge Phelps showed no mercy. A similar case may be tried this term against Frang Van Loten of Free Water on indecent exposure and contributing to delinquency of minor girls. Van Loten was indicted this morning. The McCullough boys, indicted on horse stealing, were arraigned this morning.
H H Wessel, longtime Pendleton merchant, has sold his clothing store and will retire from business while remaining in Pendleton. New managers Karo and Gale plan an energetic renewals drive. Store closed for inventory, expected to take one to two weeks before sale is finalized.
Washington April 16 Preparations are being made to assist Americans in Mexico to leave the country. Many women and children in Mexico City have arrived in Tampico and will be brought north on the steamship Esperanza. At the house foreign affairs committee meeting Chairman Flood clarified that marines or Linejackets will not be landed without constitutional authorization. Daniels reported to the President and Secretary Bryan that fleet orders were carried out with speed, Garrison informed the president the army is ready when needed. Tumulty denied reports of presidential dissatisfaction with O Shaughnessy over friendly ties with Huerta.
Suit to foreclose a mortgage on Wenaha Springs was filed in circuit court by R L Bewley claiming $14,300 in stock and alleging breach of mortgage terms for unpaid interest and bonds. Morris named as defendant. Bewley seeks sale of stock and recovery of principal, interest, attorney fees, and costs.
Spokane April 14 A warrant was issued for James W Middleton assistant postmaster and lumber company agent at Roxboro Washington. Inspectors say Middleton confessed to burning the Roxboro post office to cover spending $500 he had collected for the lumber firm and $300 in cash.
