Oregon National Guard forms Company L third infantry

Fifty-two volunteers from the city took the oath of service for Company L, third infantry, Oregon National Guard after a medical exam. M. Kern was elected captain with Smythe as first lieutenant and Aldrich as second. The unit will drill Wednesdays at Fort Stevens, and a banquet followed at the Pendleton Hotel. Roster includes Kern, Smythe, Aldrich, Hartman, Craneton and many others.

Principal Brayton fatally shot iu Ray mond home

In Chicago on April 11 James H Brayton principal of the Raymond school and juror in the Haymarket case was found shot in his home. A revolver with one cartridge was found nearby and the bullet was in his head. he died half an hour after discovery.

Land sale thwarted by new leglislation at Tongue Point

In Clatsop County on the lower Columbia 2500 acres sought at 2 per acre to defeat the land sale pause were rejected as applications were indefinitely turned down. Under the new act lands not withdrawn must sell to the highest bidder at no less than 5 dollars per acre. Applicants led by Portland attorney W. T. Muir included mainly Portland parties.

Armed citizens swarm Calfor tia town after fires set

Oakedale April 4 armed citizens sweep the town after John Gratz and George Sohloh are arrested on suspicion of setting fires in several stores. A brother of one prisoner threatened to lynch, amid belief the arson aimed to cover a robbery. Two buildings burned including Jehloh brothers shop.

Colonial Conference Delegations Arrive in London

Delegations from Canada Newfoundland Australia New Zealand Cape Colony and Natal reach London for the colonial conference with Sir Wilfrid Laurier leading Canada. The talks start Monday and a large hotel suite is reserved for colonial premiers with an official from the colonial office assigned to attend to their needs. India is represented by the secretary for India with a council member deputed.

Man Arrested at Carnegie Entrance Over Patent Milk Paster

A man identifying as Frederick Siegel, 38, was arrested at a Pittsburgh hotel entrance this morning while claiming to seek meeting with Andrew Carnegie over a supposed patent cow milker. He carried an open jackknife in his cuff and claimed he was from Los Angeles.

Stockton April 10 body of an unknown man with a bullet wound to the heart and narcotic marks was found on Southern Pacific tracks between Riverside and Tracy after a train passed, believed to be a safeblower murdered by accomplices. Mrs Sylveeten milli, Prodigal magnate’s wife, was found dead in a lake this morning, suspected suicide.

Body of Fireman Still Missing After Wreck Near Coruse

Rescue efforts on the Umatilla river continue for Fireman McPartridge killed in yesterday’s wreck. Officials believe the body lies under the submerged engine as 50 workers, cranes, and burning debris continue the recovery and wreckage cleanup.
