County School Superintendent I E Young completed apportioning the county school fund. Each student receives eight dollars. several districts forfeited funds for not meeting six month schooling or for not reporting. State funds add to local county allocations, with a list of districts, pupil counts, and recipients among local clerks and stewards.
A 50 year veteran offers a concrete plan for solid sidewalks. Recommends 8 inches subgrade 4 inches gravel base and 3.5 inches cement concrete with four sacks per yard of gravel and sand. Uses equal Portland cement and river sand for finish and warns against black river sand. Offers free estimates via East Oregonian office.
Washington reports that Luis Manuel Rojas, vice president of the Mexican lower house, filed with the state department charges that U S Ambassador Henry L Wilson is morally responsible for the deaths of former President Madero and former Vice President Suárez. The State Department confirms receipt and notes hints of growing Mexican opinion favoring Wilson's removal. his resignation was cabled when Wilson became president, with no successor named yet.
The United States Supreme Court affirmed James Donnelly’s murder conviction for killing an Indian on the Hoopa Indian Reservation. Donnelly argued the crime occurred between the high and low water marks on the Klamath River to avoid federal jurisdiction, but the claim was rejected.
Rev George Chalmers Richmond of St John’s Episcopal Church denounces J P Morgan for prioritizing fur trade and business, calling him unfit as a model for Christian youth. He says the country would fare better without him and that Morgan’s death might spur more to testify before the committee.
North Yakima Washington April Apple Day celebration featured a pie baking contest among high school pupils. The second prize went to an apple pie baked by baseball team first baseman Howard Lum son of Representative C E Lum. The top prize was won by Winona McCaw daughter of Sam McCaw a Yakima Indian employed at Yakima National Bank.
Senator Chamberlain introduced a bill authorizing the government to locate construct and operate railroads in Alaska. Delegate Wickersham introduced the same measure in the house. The bill stems from conferences among parties interested in Alaska development.
