Telegrams report broad unrest with police clashed with crowds at a planned meeting. Armed troops charged the crowd with fixed bayonets injuring many including civilians. A parliament member burned a government proclamation as another meeting proceeded amid threats of riot.
The speaker argues tariffs shrink wages and raise material costs, citing 1850 to 1880 shifts in material versus wage shares, a 47 percent tariff burden, and alleged declines in worker pay despite living costs. He claims American labor is highly productive but hampered by protectionism, urging free trade to boost wages and national prosperity.
A man leaped from the Morrison Street bridge at seven last night and drowned. Spectators urged rescue, but he could not be saved. Police identify him as a probable opium feud figure named Wm McMahon. body not recovered. In Downdal straits since October, Oregon state officials press the final call for unpaid warrants. Wasco County sent full amounts yesterday, Multnomah faces current delays, and payments were partially fulfilled earlier in April. Harris 75,00 stands as a mis-spell in the report with several counties slow to remit.
