In Tacoma the Republican Linck won a large majority in the municipal election. Thousands of scratched tickets backed him, delivering a sweeping victory and a solid delegation of Republican officials. Inauguration is lined up for next Wednesday.
H B Plummer alleges that T T Geer solicited a $1000 payoff to appoint him penitentiary superintendent. Plummer claims Geer failed to keep the promise and instead appointed J D Lee. Belden H Grant corroborates the assertion in an April 1908 sworn affidavit witnessed by Notary Geo A Brodie.
J. T. Cox, independent cattle buyer of Seattle, ships fifteen carloads of eastern Oregon fat steers to Alaska, with two cars purchased from Dan Shaw and the rest from Ontario. Cox says Alaska markets are rising and soon a large inland empire supply will be needed, aided by better transportation. Nate Rains also shipped two cars to Seattle from Ritter. Over 10,000 head have been sent this winter with strong prices for feeders.
Athletes from Pomona College and the University of California produced notable marks as Berkeley defeated Pomona 602 3 over Pomona 81 1 3. The largest auto owned by Union auto tests is bound for Hot Lake for Dr. Phy and praised by the La Grande Observer. The 6 cylinder Franklin machine is priced at 4600 dollars and can reach 60 miles an hour. Automobiling is rising in Union county with 17 cars in La Grande and 34 outside, and more purchases planned. Joy Van Buren travels to Portland aiming to buy a new car with others também considering new machines.

The Condon Globe reports a major sheep shearing project at Smythe and Smith's plant, five miles south of Arlington. Sixteen machines powered by a six horsepower gasoline engine will process forty thousand sheep this season, averaging 2000 head daily. Sheep are in good condition though pasture is scarce, and the lambing season has been notably successful with few losses.
