April 5 Tehachapi News reports another landslide at the Tehachapi tunnel shortly after the first was cleared. A steam shovel works to reopen the line while Banta Fe and Southern Pacific transfer passengers and mails. No freight moves. services are indefinitely delayed.
Kansas City April 4 The Panhandle steers moving to Kansas pastures are to begin around April 20 and will nearly double last year’s numbers. Most are four year old and fatten quickly on grass. Steers sell by the head for 2 to 10 dollars in the pastures, and about 20 to 25 dollars at stockyards. Texas stock sent to northern pastures.
In Portland on April 5 supporters rally for Multnomah County Sheriff Tom Word. Prohibitionists and law enforcement back Word and urge Democrats to join in primaries to ensure his re election amid elevated Democratic registration. Republicans show small gains by switching to Democrat lines to back Word.
The body of W. R. Davis, who died by his own hand on Barnes Heights two weeks ago, was exhumed and cremated after his brother informed Maine parents. The ashes will be shipped to Maine. Coroner Finley supervised the cremation. Also noted is a boxing bout: Young Corbett and Dick Hyland set to fight in Salt Lake on April 24 at 145 pounds.

State constabulary moved to Fernwood colliery and Mocanaqua amid gunfire and threats to burn villages. numerous arrests followed. At Windber two striking miners were shot by guards but not seriously hurt. In Irwin a clash between guards and a crowd of 157 left Lieutenant Rhodes struck on the head. guards were sworn in and more clashes ensued. National mine workers officials were appealed for settlement efforts.
In Rome dated April 5 the Vesuvian eruption is reported with five lava streams descending the mountain. Ash and ash fall reach Naples as villagers evacuate and try to seek shelter from the volcanic activity.
A Hallack Lumber & Supply plant covering twenty acres burned in Denver this morning. The fire caused about 200000 dollars in losses. Fire officials assessed the damage and investigated the cause as the blaze swept through the facility.

A 25 year old woman identified as Mrs Emo Bardelben was found dead in a Palmer House room with a bullet wound and a pistol nearby. Her companion said she was married to an electrical engineer from Rhode Island whom she planned to visit California with for her health. Bardelben later told police the woman was Edith Cooper of Philadelphia.

They have received a letter from Mrs Ledoux’s mother Mrs Head and are prostrated by the revelation.
