Washington April 2 Republican leaders in Congress cannot pass a peace measure over President Wilson's veto. Democratic leaders Champ Clark and Moi say a two thirds majority cannot force the reservation, and Wilson has indicated he will not sign the resolution.
Portland April 2 A letter to 176 organized labor unions urges all members to back the higher educational relief bill on May 3. Oregon State Federation of Labor president Martwix stresses the crisis in education and calls members and their families to register and vote, noting most applicants come from working ranks.
Chile declares it will not accept intervention in its Chilean Bolivian dispute or any other quarrel with neighbors from the United States or any power. The communication was sent to American Ambassador Shea.

TE Keehan and others organizing decor, hall setup and refreshments. Committees include decoration lighting quality and reception duties with members listed, and refreshments coordinated by Tarney Otte CP Ati ler W Brace W Miller and BX Nichole Pherciatlogg.
Attorney General Palmer faces questioning by a secure sub committee next week over alleged sugar profiteering. The inquiry follows claims that Cuban sugar was routed to Louisiana and re labeled as Louisiana sugar to fetch 17 cents a pound above government price, with Oregon and other western states seeing price rises. Senator McNary, head of the sugar committee, scheduled a Monday meeting to consider charges.

Two hundred victory medals owned by the state of Oregon for World War I service arrived for distribution by the American Legion Pendleton post. Local coal dealers forecast a price hike within ten days from 75 cents to 1.26 a ton following a 27 percent miners pay rise effective April 1. Current price is 19.25 per ton with notices of increases expected. A further rise by October 1 is anticipated due to higher freight costs, though prices are not guaranteed amid unsettled conditions.
Seattle April 2 The motor ship Libby Maine reported in distress off Cape Flattery after a heavy sea and a wireless call to the Merchants Exchange. The coast guard cutter Snohomish at Tatoosh was ordered to aid. The Libby Maine was bound from San Francisco to Portland with labor and cargo, under rescue efforts by crew and shipmasters.
