Pella Farm Pond Draws Local Notice At Hiemstra Site
On the J C Hiemstra farm a stock pond is being built on the Dr P Lankelma property operated by Henry and Elvin Bensink in Bethel. The pond drains 70 acres with a large dam and diversion, featuring a deep barrel filter and a water pipe to a future stock tank. Builders Terrell and Steele supervised. engineers from the U S Service aided. The project moved 3600 cubic yards of earth for the dam and 400 for the diversion. The Bensinks plan rye and brome grass around the pond and will stock bass and bluegills later. Nearby, Elvin and Eunice Bensink, along with their children Ronald and Rita Diane, share a modern home built by Dr and Mrs H P Lankelma of Cleveland. The farm runs about 375 acres with 40 cows, 250-275 hogs, and diverse crops. County ASC notes funding available for pond construction as ponds with larger drainage areas gain use in dry weather. Weather data from Pella station listed.

Heavy Rain Causes Extra Water Runoff
In a period of very heavy rainfall, extra surface water overwhelms drainage, increasing runoff and flood risk. Officials warn residents to expect localized pooling and possible temporary road closures as catch basins reach capacity. Nearby rivers remain within banks but elevated levels prompt monitoring.
Remove Starch From An Electric Iron Carefully
Elizabeth Beveridge of Iowa State College warns against scraping starch from an iron. If starch stains the plate, let the iron cool and place it on a damp cloth pad to soften the starch before cleaning.

How to remove starch from a hot iron safely
Cleaning advice warns not to wash away a stubborn starch spot while hot and to cool first. Use warm water and soap or fine cleansing powder on a damp cloth, with steel wool only on aluminum sole plates and never on chrome ones. Apply paraffin to prevent sticking, and replace a dented sole plate if needed.
