Mixture of Grasses Best for Waterways

Iowa extension agronomist Marvin Anderson says several grasses suit waterways to prevent gullies. Reed canary grass should be seeded in moist soil late August to early September, with bromegrass used in western Iowa and timothy elsewhere. Red top and bluegrass fit in drier or wetter areas. He urges mixed species over single grasses, warns against deep rooted legumes, notes fall seeding reduces weed competition, and advises higher seeding rates plus grasshopper control where needed.
