Death of John Van Veen in France
Mrs. H Van Veen learns her son John Van Veen died in France likely from battle injuries in late July. Enlisting with Co H 168th Infantry from Pella IA, he left Iowa in October 1917 and wrote cheerful letters home about service. News arrived unusually through the government insurance department before the war department casualty list. The note adds that Arthur DeJoode wrote from a hospital indicating John was wounded. The last family letter dated July 18 gave no hint of wounds.
