Apply Lime Now For Best Results
Limestone applied this fall corrects soil acidity for next spring legume seeding says Iowa State extension agronomist Joe Stritzel. Fall limestone should be worked in to prevent washouts and be fine enough for max effectiveness, with soil testing guiding rates and split applications for alfalfa and red clover compatibility.

Water Helps Hogs Gain in Winter
A winter trial at Iowa State College swine farm tested hog gains with water access. Pigs given heated automatic waterers averaged about 58 to 60 pounds gain, while atmospheric water kept at 16 to 28 degrees yielded similar gains despite frozen troughs. Feed per 100 pounds of gain was lower with warmed water, though mild weather blurred differences. Researchers conclude constant water availability matters more than water temperature.

Pigs Kept at 55 Degree Temperature Study Findings
The experiment used 117 kilowatt hours of electricity over 11 weeks to deliver water for 12 pigs. Researchers note electricity use scales with pig numbers and suggest turning off waterer supply on days above freezing to save energy. They find no benefit to higher temperatures than needed to prevent freezing, and recommend thermostats set to 45 to 48 degrees to avoid surface freezing at minimum cost.
