Ed Cott of Iowa State College advises fall garden prep to ease spring busy times. Plow the garden this fall and spread 1 to 2 tons of barnyard manure to boost yields and soil structure. Apply 10-20-10 fertilizer at 15 pounds per 1000 sq ft and a 6-10-4 or 5-10-5 mix at 20 to 25 pounds per 1000 sq ft. Save leaves from the lawn and spread them before the fertilizer. If manure or fertilizer is plentiful, adjust quantities accordingly.
