Feeding grain to sheep with good grazing is seldom profitable
The passage notes that grain feeding is rarely profitable when pasture is good, with flocks often thriving and lambs marketable without grain. It estimates about 100 pounds of grain per year per ewe and lambs as the upper profitable limit, and advises frequent pasture changes and winter rations of leguminous hay and succulent seeds, with any grain fed only in winter after lambing.
