The Des Moines Iowa state fair posted receipts 10,000 dollars higher than last year amid sunny weather and expanded exhibits. Roosevelt plans pieces of his Iowa tour with travel itineraries and a two hour stop in Des Moines. Farm machinery price increases of five to twenty five percent were announced, with steel costs cited.
Three Assyrian emigrant boys arrested in Fort Dodge faced trial at Clarion and are en route back to their homeland. One boy Melham Koury is penniless and homeless after losing his last family member. The youths cried for asylum while investigators pursue the smuggler who took their money.
Hiram W Needles died at his Mapleton residence after a long illness. A longtime Mapleton resident, he kept the town's first hotel and had lived in Monova county for eighty five years. His death marks the passing of a prominent local figure with deep ties to the community.
The veil craze grows as women adopt two veils on hats, shifting from bright green to all black or all white with chic mesh patterns. Of 412 inmates, 365 male state prisoners, seven U S prisoners, and 20 females. Four new arrivals are under death sentence. Among 208 admitted, 110 were liquor addicts. Woodbury County contributed 29 of the year’s arrivals. Parole activity included 41 paroles with one return for parole violation and one self surrender. No escapes occurred. Labor value produced $72,521.29.
Special Correspondence reports Ernest Gaston of Des Moines organized the Fair Hope colony on a bay land ten miles from Mobile Alabama. The cooperative community now numbers about 300 members engaged in fruit and truck farming with its own ship and a quarter mile bay wharf. Products are marketed in New York City and beyond as plans for expansion move forward.
Special correspondence notes a four-in-hand coach race at Des Moines during the third week of September as part of the horse show. A. F. Ashbrook of Kansas City and George E. Palmer of Denver will compete with a $2,000 purse per side. The four-mile course runs from West Ninth and Walnut to the stock pavilion at the state fair grounds.
Rural mail carriers statewide press their agitation for increased remuneration from the government. They currently receive a flat $600 yearly for routes 25 to 40 miles long, requiring multiple horses as wear and tear. With corn at 50 cents and oats at 40 cents, carriers face a yearly deficit.
Cedar Falls farmers press Cedar Valley Telephone for faster service as demand outstrips supply. One camper blocked the office to get a line, while manager Bennett offered two dollars a day for outdoor work and the man realized the staff shortage claim.
Great Western officials locate two new towns on the line in Shelby County near Harlan and Shelby. Tennant sits about eight miles southwest of Harlan on land recently bought from Than Lawson. The town lies five miles north of Shelby on the Rock Island line and is expected to attract substantial trade.

Morenci Michigan on September 8 publishes a letter from J. B. Whitehead praising Dodd's Kidney Pills. He describes severe kidney trouble causing days of immobility and great pain.
