Farmers Attend Albia Field Day At Pasture Farm
Marion County farmers met at Albia Pasture Improvement Farm for field day. Attendees included Ray Mosher James Brooks Ray Brooks Walter Johnson Bill Den Adel and Jake De Haan of the Pella Co op. Participants discussed Vernal alfalfa for pasture sorghum trial plots and land clearing and seeding practices. Vernal alfalfa pasture boosted production about 25 percent over bluegrass and outperformed Birdsfoot Trefoil in tests. Hybrid forage sorghums showed strong growth with guidance to harvest for silage at 50 percent hard dough stage and caution about early cutting.
