Fire on the Christopher Columbus Express in Milwaukee trip
Mr and Mrs Henry Wormhoudt and Dump and Ed recount a near disaster aboard the whaleback Christopher Columbus. On the return voyage from Milwaukee to Chicago an engine room fire sparked an explosion heard across the boat. With 2500 to 3000 aboard, life preservers were deployed and wireless aid sent. The fire was extinguished within an hour and the vessel reached Chicago safely. no injuries were reported.

Early today lack of water pressure contributed to a major blaze that leveled the Wooden Shoe Brush Works plant, barn, storage rooms and home of H E Bollinger at 1007 West Mill Street, along with the house of Mrs Cynthia Gupston of Carpia North Dakota. Firefighters fought through frame structures as water flow proved insufficient and ladders burned while crews tried to reach upper levels.
