Bandstra presses on OEO laxity over poverty standard
Iowa congressman Bert Bandstra urged a House subcommittee to demand why the Iowa Office of Economic Opportunity was not informed of a revised federal poverty standard announced May 2. He argues the 1964 rule overstates rural poverty and caused confusion, stressing Iowa officials were left to rely on an outdated measure.

Mail Held Up by Des Moines Police Delays Pella Route
Mail from Des Moines to Oskaloosa was four hours late after Des Moines police detained Star Route driver Wayne Van Hemert for lacking a truck registration while transfer of routes occurred. The delay disrupted deliveries to Pella and nearby towns as postmasters and clerks scrambled to sort the 5:40 a.m. mail and reroute for afternoon deliveries. The police chief later ordered the driver's release after confirming the plan to move the mail without delay.
