Hog price surge defies usual market relation says ISU expert
Hog prices in interior Iowa and southern Minnesota rose sharply with U S No 13 200 240 pound butchers averaging about $24 in early August versus $16 09 a year earlier. ISU extension economist Gene Futrell notes prices are substantially higher than traditional relationships would predict and cautions that future months may not sustain the surge. The analysis links price strength to beef prices per capita income population and consumer food preferences, but the unusual rise suggests the market may not follow past patterns. Fall quarter prices are projected to be about 25 percent above 1964 levels if current influences persist.
