Rye Pasture Has Many Advantages for Livestock Feed
Iowa State College extension agronomist Ralph Krenzin notes late fall and early spring rye pastures extend grazing, save labor, and provide high protein feed. The Balbo rye variety offers strong yield and flavor stability, with about 80 percent protein when mature, enabling cows to produce milk with fewer odors. Seeding at 2 bushels per acre is advised, as rye offers winter hardiness similar to winter wheat and improves feed quality for hogs and cattle.

Let Corn Mature If at All Possible Let Corn Mature If at All Possible
Frost damage to corn in August prompts discussion on silage value from immature corn. ISU extension dairyman Floyd Arnold notes milk stage corn has about two thirds the dry matter of ripe corn and less digestible nutrients. Tests show milk stage on Sept 10 yields about 6,000 lb dry matter per acre vs 9,400 lb for mature corn on Oct. Farmers with frost free crops may wait to mature, while damaged corn may be best made into silage. Silage is palatable, economical, and useful in winter. it is slightly laxative. Best use is for cattle and sheep, with trench silos as a consideration if frost threats persist.
