Cattle on Feed August 1 1929 Iowa report
Iowa farms report four percent more cattle on feed for market by August 1 1929 than a year earlier according to federal statistician Alfred Britta. Shipments of stocker and feeder cattle into Iowa from twelve markets were heavier for March to August 1929 except two July weeks, while January to August totals ran about 82 percent of the five year average. Projections show average weights likely below normal, with similar ranges 900 to 1800 pounds as last year though 18 percent fewer in 900–1100 pounds and about 10 percent more in 1100–1800 pounds. Feeder purchases by corn belt feeders for the last five months of 1929 expected to match 1928. August 1 plantings in corn belt states are less certain due to uncertain corn prospects. Iowa buyers expect slightly larger feeder purchases for remainder of year. Iowa’s August 1 corn yield trend is slightly above ten year average. Fall feeder demand to focus on calves and yearlings with a small shift from calves to yearlings under 750 pounds. The August 1 feeding cattle index by state shows Ohio 107 percent, Illinois 110 percent, Minnesota 107 percent, Missouri 106 percent, Nebraska 90 percent, Indiana 104 percent, Michigan 102 percent, Iowa 104 percent, South Dakota 105 percent, Kansas 90 percent, and a weighted ten-state index at 101 percent.
