Plan Lunch Box Menus Ahead for Sandwiches That Do the Job
Iowa State College nutritionists advise planning weekly lunch box menus with a dedicated making center and ready gear. Gather wax paper, containers, napkins, bread knife, paring knife, spatulas, bowls, spoons, salt, pepper, and nonrefrigerated staples. Include protein rich fillings like cheese meat eggs fish and chicken to pair with bread proteins for complete amino acids. Freeze sandwiches to extend freshness, using peanut butter cheddar American cream cheese and sliced or ground meats. avoid egg salad and mayonnaise for freezing. Store frozen sandwiches up to a week in fridge and thaw about an hour before serving. label breads freeze well and wrap each sandwich separately to prevent flavor mingling. Plan two sandwiches per child under 12 and four to five for active older kids plus milk fruit vegetables and a simple dessert for balanced lunches.
