Pella Retail Sales Dip in 1964 Versus 1963

The 1964 Annual Tabulation of Retail Sales and Use Tax by the Iowa State Tax Commission shows Pella total sales at 9,225,000, down 73,000 from 1963. Marion County up 2.3 percent. Knoxville up 3.1 percent. Monroe up 61 percent to 2,530,000. New Sharon down 12.4 percent to 1,565,000. Nearby cities and reports listed.

Lester Adair rites set for Monday in Des Moines

Funeral services for Lester Milton Adair 54 of Des Moines and formerly Prairie City Ia will be held Monday October 19 1964 at 2 00 p m at the Van Dyk Duven Chapel Des Moines with Rev Richard A De Jong officiating and burial in Portergrove Cemetery near Pella He died Friday at Town Methodist Hospital Des Moines Surviving are two sons Wayne Adair Des Moines and Walter Adair Colfax A complete obituary will appear later in the Chronicle.

Cox Snow Music Center Dedication At Central College

Dr Francis J Pyle of Drake University spoke at Central College as the $300 000 Cox Snow Music Center was dedicated during Homecoming weekend in the recital hall. The center honors Dr Henry Cox and Queen Snow Cox and the Brower Music Library was also dedicated. Special music was provided by the A Capella Choir directed by Lawrence Grooters.

Ken Locke Remains Critical After Pella Game

Ken Locke 18 Knoxville quarterback collapsed on the next to last play of the Pella Knoxville game Friday night. He was rushed to Knoxville hospital and later transferred to Mercy in Des Moines where he remained in critical condition awaiting neurosurgery.

A patient identified as Geon was taken at 11 40 p m Friday night to remove a blood clot on his brain. By Monday he had not regained consciousness.

Marion County Zoning Commission approved minor changes to the Zoning and Subdivision Ordinances and scheduled a public hearing for November 10. The meeting included discussion of proposed revisions from a special study committee and a report on mineral extraction permit questions.

Sixth district conference to meet in Pella on Oct 24

About 350 members of The American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary are expected at the Sixth District Fall Conference in Pella on October 24. Registration begins 8:30 for the Auxiliary and 9:00 for the Legion, with a flag ceremony in City Park and a 10:00 service school. A social hour, tour to Red Rock Dam, a joint banquet, tulip queen entertainment, and a Country Club dance follow at the Pella facilities attended by Legionnaires and Auxiliary members.

Democratic caravan set for Marion County tour on Oct 23

The Marion County Democratic Party will organize a countywide caravan Friday October 23. Chairman William B. Dunshee announced the gathering at Knoxville headquarters at 7 45 am. Central student greets Goldwater at Des Moines rally

Craig Chilton, 23, a Central college student, breached police barriers in Des Moines to shake hands with Senator Barry Goldwater after a downtown speech. He carried a 59 mile hitchhike sign, posed for photographers, and after his polaroid was developed one photo showed only Goldwater. one shot appeared in the Iowa State Daily.

Parent-Teacher Conferences Set For October 23

The community schedules parent teacher conferences on Friday October 23 with sessions from 8 00 to 12 00 and 1 00 to 5 00 pm. Parents may attend at their convenience within these hours to meet teachers, following the same procedure as last fall which satisfied both teachers and parents.
