Water in Farm Pond Drawn Down Into Old Coal Mine
A pond on the Mike Kurimski farm four miles west of Lovilia vanished after a cave-in linked to the Maple coal mine. The hole 30 feet across and 20 feet deep replaced a former 100 foot by ¼ mile pond formed by Knox coal stripping. Water drained in about 48 hours, likely via old mine shafts, producing a whirlpool and water pushing downstream. The Maple mine was abandoned in 1925. cave-in likely occurred near the north entry.
