A Pella student becomes a midshipman at Ames Ammon and receives Navy commission this week. The officer will serve active duty for several years and may pursue a Navy career or transfer later. While at college, he will study for a Bachelor of Science degree.
PVT Myron H Beerends of Pella is training at Camp Breckenridge Kentucky and will observe his birthday October 17. CPL Gary E van Voort of the 26th Infantry Division has returned from furlough and is stationed in Bamberg Germany after arriving in Germany August 25. He previously trained at Camp Rucker Alabama and was inducted February 1951.

Arvin and Norman Nieuwsma, sons of Mr and Mrs Henry Nieuwsma of Pella Iowa, serve in the U S Navy. Arvin Nieuwsma husband of Lucila Nieuwama of Oskaloosa entered service November 13 and, after San Diego boat train and a leave, serves as fireman on the battleship Iowa BB-61 in San Francisco.
A. D. A. A. Norman Nieuwsma son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Nieuwsma of Pella entered service November 3 1951. He received boat training at Great Lakes and after leaves attended A and P school in Jacksonville Florida and A D A school in Memphis Tennessee. He graduated and after a 12 day leave flew to Norfolk Virginia where he is now serving.
Panama based Private Paul Zylstra, a fire control school graduate at Fort Bliss, and his wife Mrs. Zylstra spent a ten day furlough with parents in Sully and Searsboro. Zylstra enlisted in February 1952 and will return to duty at Fort Bliss as AAA fire control mechanic instructor. Vernon Vander Leest, son of Neal and Mrs. Vander Leest, recently completed an eighty day furlough and now resides at Ft. Riley, Kansas as Corporal R Vander Leest.
Pvt Lawrence Bogaards, son of Mr and Mrs Andrew Bogaards of Route 8 Oskaloosa and husband of Mrs Bertha Bogaards of Pella, has entered U S service on September 16 and departed for basic training at Fort Bliss Texas. His address is Pvt Lawrence Bogaards U S Army paratroop unit 12th engineer battalion at Fort Bliss Texas.
Pvt Wilbur J Veenstra son of Mr and Mrs John W Veenstra Route 2 Pella Iowa has arrived in Germany and is serving with the 43rd Infantry Division now stationed in the south part of the country as part of NATO forces undergoing constant field training
Veenstra serves as a rifleman in Company Recon within the Division's 102nd Infantry. Before enlisting in the Army, he worked on a farm and showed sturdy, practical experience relevant to service.
The Towa Safety Council urged individuals and organisations to join a two point program to cut fire and gun accident deaths. Homeowners should have fire departments inspect homes during Fire Prevention Week October 5 to 11 and check furnaces, flues, basements and roofs as winter heating season nears.
The Council tallies 37 deaths from Iowa fires in the first half and fire losses reaching 5 748 826 by the end of the first nine months. It highlights October gun safety outreach with the conservation commission and civic groups. Experienced hunters will mentor youths to promote safe firearm handling with rules: treat every gun as loaded, never leave a loaded gun unattended, and keep the muzzle under control at all times.
Pella youths at Central College win student government roles. Peggy Leu becomes vice president of the senior class and secretary of the Student Supreme Court, while George Ver Otley’s daughter is elected secretary of the junior class. The Student Cabinet appoints eight members to the judicial body overseeing student disputes.
