Editorial urges drivers in Pella to slow down and check before backing to reduce costly fender benders in the busy central business district. Most incidents occur during the day in parking areas. slowing slightly and improving awareness could cut damage and upkeep costs.
City hall officials Jane Bandstra and Carol Prisha emphasize careful reading of the new zoning ordinance. Planning commission members led by Howard Anderson faced critique yet are praised for many meetings and public outreach. Ron Neil, public works director, aided the project from the start as the commission’s work was described as demanding but well intentioned.
The Midwest Old Settlers and Threshers Reunion celebrated its 25th anniversary with a busload of 20 senior citizens visiting Mt. Pleasant last week. Highlights included 65 wood burning steam engines in the Cavalcade of Power, Heritage Hall displays, and demonstrations from cream separation to weaving and bead work.
Thieves broke into the sleigh school and stole 1150 in cash and checks from the interior. Paris was the homecoming queen at PHS with attendants Karen Fucker Kay Butler Nancy Cruzen and Sonja Shetterly.
A five day event features Suger cookies and cider, a pioneer school, log cabins, and a single room schoolhouse. Volunteers lead old time songs beside antique desks, a red stove, and penny penmanship charts. An antique car museum, threshing by horse, and an 1880 merry-go-round draw visitors. Concessions are church and charity driven with period costumes from the 1890s.
