Farm Pond Tour Marred by Date Mix Up in Marion County

Reporter and photographer missed a planned tour with Marion County couples due to a date misunderstanding. Ponds near J. C. Hiemstra, Albert Rietveld, and Elvin and Henry Bensink were inspected after heavy rain, showing near full or partially filled watersheds. Farmers report better pasture color and promising clover seedings, with corn yields expected around fifty bushels per acre or more and notable oats yields.

Statewide fall farrowing plans show 21,000 fewer pigs

A survey indicates farmers expect 21,000 fewer sows to farrow this fall in the state than the intentions report suggested as of June 1. The finding highlights revised projections for pork production across counties and raises questions about feed costs and market demand.

Record High Farrowing Season Dims Past Estimates

The quarterly estimate for summer farrowings June through August shows 630,000 sows farrowed as of September, the largest on record for the period, up 8 percent from the previous high of 684,000. Farrowings would account for 55.7 percent of fall totals if fall intentions hold, compared with 57.8 percent last year and the 10-year average of 49.8 percent.

Rye Excellent For Fall and Early Spring Pasture

Rye is advised for late fall and early spring pasture, with fall seedings from September to October. In southwest Iowa, winter wheat can also be used. Agronomist Harvey Thompson urges preparing seedbeds now and awaiting moisture, as rainfall is crucial for successful fall seeding, with rye sown at about 1 1/2 bushels per acre.

Rye pasture guidance for seedbed and grazing timing

Thompson outlines expected forage yields from rye on good seedbeds and recommends Balboa for pasture. Rye can be grazed in fall until freezes, with 2 to 3 inches of stubble left for winter. Fall grazing plus spring grazing boosts yield about 10 percent versus spring alone. fertilize per soil tests or use 30 to 40 pounds nitrogen if unavailable. Fall-seeded rye offers dairy value as pasture extends grazing into fall and early spring.
