Iowa plans biological wrinkling to gird against corn borer

State entomologist Dr. Carl J. Drake announced a plan to bolster Iowa against the European corn borer by breeding up the native smartweed borer and releasing its parasites. The strategy aims to have natural enemies ready statewide before the pest arrives from the Great Lakes region. Researchers note no immediate danger, as no effective control exists yet and the insect problem grows each year. A Canadian entomology conference recently discussed the issue, and Drake intends to coordinate with the government to obtain parasites and begin breeding both insects and their predators.
