The girls basketball team nosed out Monroe 56 to 27 to open the season with a win. Janice Kane led scoring with 25 points while Edith Frandt added 11 despite a leg injury early. Dykstra Vander Wilt and De Jong anchored defense. next game is Tuesday November 27 at Colfax.
Devotions Monday morning led by Mr Groendyke referenced Psalm 111 and the president's request that everyone attend church on Thanksgiving morning. He emphasized gratitude for food, freedom, education, friends, communities, and churches before closing with prayer.
Mr Doorenbos joins the faculty this year at Central College Pella. He taught trombone in the faculty combo and now instructs general science general business and general math. A Morrison Illinois native he was a high school friend of Mr Wilkins. He attended Central College in 1940, served as a wartime pilot, taught at the Cadet school, joined the Army Air Corps, spent a year in the restaurant business, then worked seven years at Vogelaar's Hardware before returning to Central College two years ago.
Doorenbos aims for a degree and has taken advanced work at Drake this summer. He plans to continue next summer. His hobbies include wood working leather tooling and wood carving. He works with power tools at his home 219 Franklin Street making a cabinet for a radio TV phonograph combo. He is married to Elva Vander Waal secretary to the Dean at Central College.

Iowa City Iowa State Comptroller Glenn Sarsfield reports the state’s fiscal position as excellent for the 1955 57 biennium end June 30 1957. He notes appropriable income of 139 841 004 37 while annual appropriations total 186 585 560 91 per year. He says this will boost the general operating fund as the 1957 59 biennium begins. 55 cents of every dollar spent returns tolocal communities via education aids welfare and other services with allocations by purpose.
