Abandoned Mine Heat Reports Surface in Tribune Note
The Nov 14 Tribune front page discussed a coal mine shaft about 60 feet underground smoldering for 25 to 80 years in a bluff area. Tests showed temperatures up to 190 degrees, with 180 degrees in another hole. Engineers said the smoldering shaft won’t affect dam operations and will be allowed to continue.

Home for Aged Bazaar a Success
A large crowd attended the Home for the Aged bazaar last Friday with many turned away. Residents donated baked goods candy hand made dresses aprons and novelties auctioned by superintendent Peter Meyer. The event netted about 225 toward a new kitchen stove. The Home thanks donors and guests and notes seating was insufficient. Gerrit Van Wyke died Sunday and sympathy is extended to his family.

Mexican corn tops 18 foot stalks in English Valleys plantings
In spring the Vocational Agricultural class at English Valleys high school planted several corn varieties in experimental plots. Among them were Mexican corn seeds. Without further cultivation the stalks grew to about 18 feet with ears 14 feet from the ground.
