Skunk River to Be Straightened in Keokuk County
The county Board of Supervisors faces a petition to straighten the Skunk River from Colfax to the county’s southwest corner. The project would remove bends, create a 40 foot wide channel, shorten travel distance, and raise average fall to six inches per mile, speeding water through the county. Costs fall on benefited properties, averaging about one mile and a half affected, roughly six dollars per acre. Most landowners support the plan, which local observers estimate could boost bottom land values by about fifty dollars per acre. The only opponents cited are fishermen and hunters, who fear loss of habitat.
