Editorial notes the 1977 pheasant season opening with calls to law enforcement over unauthorized hunting on private land. It warns that few violators, including hunting from cars, threaten public safety and crops. Citizens urged to follow laws, practice caution, and report violations to keep the sport respectable.
Ten years back in 1967 Central defeated Buena Vista 43 to 0 for its 23rd straight win and fourth consecutive Iowa Conference title. Over 16,500 pounds of clothing were donated in Pella for the United Clothing Appeal of Church World Service to aid the world’s needy.
A letter from the American Legion, Department of Iowa, urges returning Veterans Day to its traditional November 11 date. It laments amnesia in society and media stereotypes of veterans, calls for accuracy, and asks the nation to honor sacrifices of all who served in World Wars and Korea and Vietnam.
A bus trip from Vancouver to Penticton visits the Okanagan Game Farm a 600 acre facility housing 350 animals of 70 species including Siberian tiger warby eland mountain zebra and onager. Director Ed Lacy explains the farm doubles as a hospital for injured animals and cooperates with universities and other farms to increase endangered species births. Over 80 000 visitors last year."
Ron Durst 18 a freshman at Central College died November 3 at Iowa Methodist Hospital Des Moines from apparent heart failure. Son of Mr and Mrs Melvin Durst Guthrie Center he was a member of the freshman football squad and valedictorian of his high school class. Memorial services were held at the college Monday evening. A complete obituary appears on page 7 of this week's Chronicle.
Arthur J. Bosch of Central College was among 24 college teachers from five Midwest states chosen to attend a National Science Foundation short course. The program aims to help instructors stay current with advances in science and covered Industrial Organic Chemistry and Cell Chemistry Teaching.
The Commission on the Aging announces statewide public hearings on legislation for older Iowans. Des Moines public session at the state capitol on Wednesday Nov. 16 at 9 a.m. invites public comment on the 1978 legislative package and the issue of abolishing mandatory retirement by age.
Republican leaders Steve Roberts and Burt Harmes announce former child star Shirley Temple Black will speak at the Des Moines GOP fall reception on Friday December 2 at Hotel Fort Des Moines. The event features a UN delegate turned diplomat Bikcee speech, a cocktail buffet, and tickets at $100 each to support the 1978 campaign efforts.
