When Mr and Mrs Hasselman moved to Pella eighty one years ago there were no telephones few cars and rural free delivery had just begun. Their many children include Peter Herman Gerrit A Sohn Mire Frank ielscots and Mel John Kaldenberg. The Kaldenbergs will be neighbors when the Hasselmans move to Main Street.

Oceanic kittiwake shot on Des Moines River
An Atlantic kittiwake was shot last fall on the Des Moines River north of Des Moines by James R. Harlan of Des Moines. It was turned to the Historical and Memorial Art department for mounting and labeled a gull. Ornithologist Phil DuMont of Des Moines later identified it as a kittiwake.

Kittiwake Sightings Expand Across U S Regions
The kittiwake, typically off the North Atlantic coast, has been observed in Long Island New York during winter months and in Wisconsin Illinois Colorado and Wyoming. Iowa has no prior reports. Researchers believe the bird traveled from the north via the North Atlantic to Judson Bay before reaching Iowa.
