Contour Planting Could Boost Iowa Corn Yields Significantly
Iowa State College agronomists say contour planting on sloping cornfields could lift yields by about 7 bushels per acre, potentially adding 40 million bushels next fall. They estimate 6 million acres could reduce erosion and loss, enough to fatten nearly 2 million hogs or a million cattle. Contour lines improve moisture absorption and minimize soil erosion, with guidance offered by extension agents and Soil Conservation Service staff.
