Activities along the Knoxville road describe tomato planting by the Schakels with Rutgers variety, water needs, and expected high yields. In Howell station area, alfalfa and clover show strong stands due to soil fertility and liming. In Fifield area, Verwers seeds hybrid corn on38 acres with varied kernels while Ted Lane operates a tractor.
The report describes clover fields thick with new growth and seedlings sprouting after flood conditions, with oat fields showing uniform clover spread. Lane praises a six cylinder tractor, while farms along Road No 14 and between Monroe and Otley show solid corn stands later in the season. Cattle herds have risen for two years as farm building booms appear.
Cattle numbers now are about ideal to reach a high point in all states except the Plains and Western areas. These regions suffered more than others from the south and remain about 5 million head short of the peak.
Iowa State College extension poultryman W R Whitfield cites 15 years of flock records from 1939 showing flocks of 75 birds net $86 above costs while 375 birds yield $485 and 845 birds $1,014. He notes 25 to 50 birds can be kept with minimal waste feed when farm attention is limited.
Charles B Bussey, Republican candidate for State Senator from Marion and Monroe counties argues for labor benefits to Iowans. He questions cement costs and external supply use, noting 330000 barrels used on highways and $860000 spent, urging reduction of WPA and direct relief.
Whitfield argues subsistence flocks struggle with sanitation and cost. He says 25 to 50 birds incur fewer problems than crowded larger flocks. Commercial poultry benefits from expanding to 300 or more birds, reducing overhead per bird and increasing net profit per bird and total income. Smaller runs of 140 to 150 birds hinder profitability due to higher input per bird.
Grass, legume and sorghum silage use has risen 75 percent among Iowa dairy herd improvement association members. Floyd Johnston of Iowa State College extension dairyman notes that this spring 276 members store crops other than corn in their silos, up from 159 two years ago.
A survey of 1,251 association members with silos found 104 used sorghums, 74 non-legume crops, 52 legumes or legume mix, 37 legumes and nonlegume mixtures, and 9 miscellaneous crops.
In an all day session at Memorial Hall on Wednesday May 48 township committeemen of the AAA in Marion county met with firmman Herbert MeCo organization to discuss 1940 adjustments. County Agent Walter Brown and Justus Benson outlined the soil conservation district project and urged its early extension to cover all of Marion county. The note also mentions an 8 to 12 pound daily concentrate requirement for an A40-pound sow on full feed.
