Rain last week delayed field work yet by Friday afternoon soil dried enough for harrowing. Corn emerged across north and west of Pella, oats darkened in color, Alfaiza fields looked vibrant, clover suffered minor drought damage with small plants and curled leaves but may recover.
The May countryside near Galesburg offers lush scenery despite drought, with corn, alfalfa, and oats in display. Roy Ritter’s Rohrdanz farm, about a mile or two from Galesburg on Reasner road, spans 350 acres and blends cattle feeding, hogs, and purebred Aberdeen Angus. Ritter raises grade Angus calves from thirty cows, with late fall-born calves on dry feed and a notable Angus bull Belmere used to improve bloodlines. The herd includes mostly black calves, a few Hereford outliers, and a well-conditioned, gentle Belmere.
The Club House farm is secondary. Ritter favors cattle over hogs though he farms about a hundred spring pigs. Hampshire sows and a Berkshire boar from Sully underpin a promising cross. Ritter cites appetite for heavier hogs urged by Secretary Wickard to bolster fall pork, noting sow retention shortfalls. The Rohrdanz family founded the 350 acre Jasper County farm in Elk Creek Township after arriving from Germany in 1844. The old home is well kept and plans exist to remodel the exterior. Fred Rohrdanz’s daughter married into the Ritter family and a granddaughter recently finished teaching near Monroe.

In a dry lot at a special Club-calf barn four calves are raised for Jasper County show and State Fair. Howard Ritter, 13, oversees two Angus calves from Marion County breeders Bane's and Snyder Bros. Lucille Ritter, younger, handles two Herefords. Both siblings belong to the Reasnor Ribbon Winners 4-H Club. Their father Roy Ritter built a 24 by 82 foot barn with stalls, feed and water access to train the calves for halter training and handling.
Iowa Governor Geo A Wilson designates June 2 to 7 1941 as Soil Conservation Week urging residents to advance soil conservation through cultivation grasses tree planting and fertilizing. The proclamation notes farmer and county participation and gratitude for conservation efforts across the state.
The article describes an honor student from Newton High planning to study teaching at Central College this summer. Mr Ritter, a Farm Bureau director, reduces corn production to about seventy acres, grows six acres of alfalfa, and emphasizes feeding farm-raised cattle on the farm. The Ritters are described as cordial hosts. Will Brouwer helps on the Engbers farm near Pella, and sourdock plants were being stuck on the farm.
Mr Ritter said he could not be found and that sour dock had not gained a foothold on the farm, asserting the struggle against weed growth continues.
A terse note hints that a single plant could seed a large plot and once started, is hard to remove. The page contains no photo to accompany the line about a handsome hired hand.
After tulips fade, snap off the flower heads to prevent seed formation. L C Grove of Town State College extension horticulturist says this saves plant food and yields a stronger bulb at year end. The same method applies to other blooms once faded.
