On Wednesday morning May 16 at 7:00 a.m. the Junior Speed Queen girls hosted a breakfast for the senior members at West Market Park. Despite a cool start, attendees enjoyed bacon and eggs with chocolate milk grape juice and a roll. The juniors are praised for the excellent breakfast and may host the seniors again next year.
Pella High Homemaking girls entered ten tulip arrangements in the annual Tulip Show at the Legion Hall with the theme It s a Lovely Day from Call Me Madam. Eight ribbons were awarded with first prizes to Sarah D for God Bless America and to Joan B and Chery B for It s Nothing That Grew on the Acres.
Valley won the South Central Iowa Conference track meet at Pella with 62 3/5 points, followed by Indianola, Winterset, Centerville, Chariton, Albia, Knoxville, and Pella. Duncan of Valley swept three events including the low hurdles and 100 yard dash, while Pella’s Jim Duffus led in the 120 yard high hurdles and Tom Mitchell’s relay team placed third in the two mile. Centerville’s Bob Warren injured a ligament in the afternoon session.
The newspaper lists editorial and reporting staff led by Editor-in-Chief Kathy Redeker with associate editors Norma De Bruin and Ellen Kemp. Assignment editors include Judy Groendyke. A Sports Editor and multiple assistants, reporters, and cub reporters under various bylines are named.
The meet was held at night for the first time in the South Central Iowa Conference. Winds and near freezing temperatures hindered performances and prevented notable marks from being achieved.

On Monday night May 14 seventeen reporters and Mr. Bronckhorst gathered for the Pelladium potluck. Pins recognizing first and second year reporters were awarded to Barbara Boat Kay Kayper Jerry Ulrich Hilma Schages Gosselink Marla De Wild Nancy Vander Meulen Judy Groendyke. Special and Quill and Scroll awards honored several staff members and editors. Norma De Bruin and Ellen Rempe will lead next year’s Pelladium team.
The writing team extends special thanks to Mr Brunckhorst and Miss Sayler for their guidance and help during the three special editions.
Rev William De Jong of Trinity Church led a devotional on March 14 stressing that final exams in life are spiritual. He described life as a training school for eternity and said Jesus’ judgment is the ultimate passing grade for mortal honors.
Students reflect on the past school year at Pella High noting the homecoming parade floats queen and court and football game. They also remember winning the South Central Conference basketball championship and enjoy a list of readings and plays including Our Hearts Were Young and Gay and The Night of January 16th.
