Pfc Connie D Rietveld writes from Germany in May 1945 expressing relief at liberation and hopes to return home soon. He shares he has seen much of Germany and asks his mother to stay well. The letter includes a personal sign off and mentions a second, nearby note to dear mother and father.

Mr and Mrs William Van Sant of Killduff visited several residents including Mr and Mrs Dirk Geenen and Joe Vanden Heu vel. Many other families from Peoria Oskaloosa and Galesburg called on or visited Mrs P De Jong and the Den Hartog and Vanden Berg households during the week.
Governor Robert Blue lauds the Iowa State Guard after a Federal Inspection by Seventh Service Command. The report praises 189 officers and 1550 enlisted men for high training efficiency and national standing.
Lt. Col. J. H. Pell of the United States engineers district in Rock Island Illinois announced on Thursday May 17 that Congress has authorized a new resurvey of the Red Rock dam project. The study will place the dam in the definite project stage and assess flood protection for Des Moines. Focus will include southeast Des Moines where substantial industrial investments have been made recently.

Legion Auxiliary members gathered at the Legion Hall to prepare hundreds of paper poppies for sale on Poppy Day May 20. The handmade tokens honor veterans of World Wars I and II and support disabled veterans and military families through the Auxiliary and Legion aid drives.
The War Food Administration says the War Department will provide more prisoners of war for farm labor this year. The War Prisoner program anticipates up to 5000 war prisoners to be used in contract agricultural work through July, under the nine service agencies. Last year about 65,000 POWs were available for farm labor.
WPA seeks more POW workers for peak fall harvest. Government plan ties military command areas to farm work via State Extension Services, while a summer term piano lesson program reports strong registration and notes music access remains tight.
