ISU Economist Sees Cattle Market Cautiously Positive
Iowa State University economist Gene Futrell reports heavy April and early 1964 slaughter raises supply and lowers prices. He notes 16 percent more cattle on feed weighing 1 100 pounds plus on April 1 across 28 states and 17 percent higher federally inspected slaughter in the first three weeks of April. Marketings remain above 1963, but demand could absorb the higher volume only if spring prices approach last year’s. He cites 9 percent more cattle on feed 900 pounds plus and 1 million more lighter cattle available to add on feed this spring and summer, with July August prices about 1 to 2 dollars below 1963 and fall prospects tied to placements.
