Fine Northern Lights Display In Pella
Pella enjoyed a very fine display of the Northern Lights Saturday evening between nine and ten. The aurora stretched across the sky, rolling in waves from the horizon to the zenith, with streams brighter than surrounding light. Moonlight muted the effect, but it resembled a searchlight. Reports say the lights were seen across the country, especially in the middle west, linked to solar activity. The phenomenon is linked by some to sunspot activity and electrical disturbances noted in telegraph networks, though wireless was unaffected. A Chicago Tribune excerpt cites Dr. John A. Brashear on sunspot theory and earth currents, noting sunspots often accompany electrical disturbances and were visible today with smoked glass.
