High School Boys Test Dandelion Kerosene Method
M M Dockendorf and the Ag Department at the high school conducted a seven plot test on the lawn to compare weed killing methods. They found spraying water white kerosene to be the most effective, with best results surpassing root removal, though the photo was not clear. The Ames Age College note explains kerosene kills dandelions without harming grass under proper conditions.

Safe kerosene lawn spray timing and dosage guidelines
The guidance warns that four pints of water white kerosene per 100 square feet are recommended for lawn spraying, with a maximum of five pints and even distribution. Spraying after specific fall dates risks grass injury, and applications should occur two to three weeks before those dates or several weeks before heavy snow or freezes. Dandelions respond best to late fall spraying. spring spraying leaves bare ground and high seedling resurgence. Spraying late afternoon on cool days yields deep root penetration and good results during late September at Ames.

Apply 0.5 to 0.75 pounds per 100 square feet then repeat in April and early October. Maintain established sod with annual fall applications and avoid mowing late in the season. A small orchard sprayer works best for kerosene spraying. if unavailable, a garden sprinkler can be used to apply the solution evenly.

Not Much Effect From Loan on Price of Corn
Iowa State College economists Geoffrey Shepherd and Walter W Wilcox report the 67 cent corn loan has had no measurable impact on average corn prices since harvest. They note a potential temporary dip in late autumn and warn the future price may hinge on the new crop and any near end of season shortages despite 280 million bushels pledged as loan security.
