Shallow Planting Ups Corn Yield, Study Finds
Iowa State extension reports from C.8 Dorchester that corn planted no deeper than 8 inches develops a strong root system and yields as well as deeper plantings. Tests show little difference in root initiation between 2 and 6 inch depths, while 2 or 3 inch depths sometimes outperform deeper sowings. Late plantings grow faster above ground but roots lag, and preplant weed control remains vital for success.
