Herman A. Van Zante a 48 year resident of the area recalls a pioneer life from a log cabin home with no stove where eight siblings shared space. He describes the old board walks muddy streets and early Dutch ancestry in The Netherlands before settling south of Pella.
Johnny Wassenaar, son of Dr. and Mrs. Peter Wassenaar, is pictured taking a bath and enjoying it. His mother, Leonore Ballengee, is a niece of Mrs. Herman A. Van Zante. Willa Wassenaar, another child of the family, stands by the car with Florida fruit on display.
Retired hardware store founder Herman A. Van Zante, a 50-year Pella resident, recalls early town days from log cabin origins to the change from hitching racks to modern streets. He recounts family ties, business shifts from implements to appliances, and the credit era that built the local economy.
The article recalls Mr Van Zante and others sleeping in an upstairs quarters with no stairs, access by a floor opening that shut for the night. It notes his long winter walks—one mile to school and back—while recounting large snowflakes and the hardship of cold travel.

Prairie View reports a warm early spring with wheat heading in days. Seventeen million acres of wheat exist in Kansas, about a third of the state. Farmers worry about weather shocks affecting the crop. Cattle grazing on wheat are fewer this year, reducing growth control. Potatoes and garden vegetables are up. corn planting underway. tractors replacing horsepower. Early wheat harvest expected. From Lynden Washington Miss Nellié Spodsma wed Frank Visser on April 19. Mrs Gertie Vander Stouwe Van Marel 60 died May 2 at her home after a heart attack. Born October 1878 in Gelderland Netherlands she married twice, Survived by Gerrit Van Marel three sons six grandchildren six brothers and two sisters. Funeral Thursday at home then First Reformed Church with Rev H Colenbrander, interment Orange City Cemetery.
William Postma born December 8, 1864 in Marion county Iowa died April 28, 1938 at his home near Monroe Iowa He married Caroline Weideman January 7 1892 at Galesburg and had nine children Charlie Clayton Richard Wilbur Oren Bertha Woody Carrie Cecyle and Gladys Also surviving two brothers sixteen grandchildren He joined the Methodist Episcopal church at 33 and later Tool’s Chapel M E church in 1916.
Funeral services for Mr. Post ma 73 years four months and twenty days old were held Saturday at 2 o clock in Tool's Chapel church with Rev W W Watson presiding. Three musical selections were performed by Neil McKee Chris Vander Pol William McConneghey Bert Vaughn served as pianist. Floral arrangements were prepared by Mrs Ernest Caulkins Mrs Don Kaldenberg and Mrs Neil McKee. Pallbearers were Roy Marshall Ernest Caulkins Jim Van Weelden Conn Kaldenberg Herman Swank and Andrew Boat. Burial followed in Monroe cemetery.
Grinnell College President John Nollen spoke at the Denmark Iowa Congregational Church centennial, urging devotion, courage, and progress in thought and faith. He contrasted democracy's beneficence with rising dictatorships, recalled pioneers who built Iowa, and noted new inner frontiers of mind and spirit.
Clint Fee, northwest of town, reports a day old pig with three fully formed tongues joining a litter of nine. The remarkable pig is otherwise normal as described by the Knoxville Journal with the other eight siblings healthy.
Hog buyers crowded the section with feeders bred gilts and market hogs, marking one of the year's best runs. Demand for pork remains erratic in big markets but local pasture conditions look favorable. Prices for light hogs and sow pork held firm while heavy weights moved into stronger brackets as June to mid July hopes rise.
