New Oats Can Be Sown Later Than Old Kinds
Iowa State College agronomist L C Burnett says newer oat varieties like Clinton tolerate sowing delays better. Experiments show a 9 day delay after earliest sowing delays maturity by only 2 days, 20 days by 5 days, with minimal impact on plant height and yields. Clinton Benton and other Bond derivatives kept yields through April 15 or 9 days late, while older varieties show greater losses. Disease resistance has improved, reducing the need to plant early to beat pests and heat.
