A motorist described a fatal mid-morning Iowa incident where a five year old girl darted into traffic from between parked cars. The driver, shaken and sick, saw the child roll in the street in the rear view mirror, and the ambulance left with the girl already dead. This cautionary tale echoes recurring spring and summer child danger on streets.
The Channel Gardens at Rockefeller Center launch a Holland bulb festival on March 24 with seven week-long displays of crocuses hyacinths daffodils and tulips. Over 60 000 bulbs imported from Holland will cover six beds from March 24 to May 5 including a one-third scale Dutch windmill. The event is hosted by Associated Bulb Growers of Holland and the Netherlands National Tourist Office with bulbs changing weekly through April and May and summer exhibits to be announced.
The town crier extols Tulip Time on May 11 12 and 13 urging care for tulips and children not to walk on flower beds. He calls for costumes street scrubbing vendors and colorful street scenes with Burgemeester Tuney Klein greeting visitors daily. He praises local talent Glen Koopman and Lee Vriezelaar for acting roles and urges active community involvement.
About 400000 multiflora rose plants remain available for Iowa farm and wildlife plantings from the State Forest Nursery at Ames. Orders total 1000000 so far, reflecting increases from soil conservation districts and cooperative game bird cover plantings. Orders accepted through April 1 with blanks from county extension directors and state conservation offices.
Seven men from the Pella area who belong to Farmers At School visited Iowa State College in Ames on March 19 to meet C H Van Vlack of the Extension Department Agricultural Engineering. They toured the engineering department and dairy, beef, and sheep facilities, aiming to learn about building foundations and framing developed by college experiments.

Long time Sumner physician Dr. W. L. Whitmire observed the 60th anniversary of his medical practice on March 1. He graduated from medical school in 1890 and moved to Sumner immediately, where he has remained ever since.
