Oil discovery near Keota shifts Iowa gas drilling view
In Washington County near Keota, the No. 2 W.F. Flynn well by Natural Gas Pipeline Co. of America yielded oil from the Pecatonica member of the Platteville formation at 990 to 999 feet, with two offset wells showing oil-bleeding cores. The oil is sour and about 30 degrees gravity. The find, accidental, suggests broader oil prospects beyond natural gas storage aims, with prior indications from 1908 wells and other Platteville observers.

Local oil shale find prompts productive prospects
The 250 to 260 foot shale in Belle Vue, Jackson County, is seen as a potential productive formation if proper structures exist, with speculation it could extend to the eastern state border. Elsewhere, a series of developments include a proposed Unity Christian high school site in Orange City, a $175,000 parochial school for about 200 students, and industrial and civic projects across multiple towns such as Greene in Greene County, Cascade retail bureau formation, and hospital and school bond actions in Marshalltown, Traer, Calamus, and Floyd County.
