Count Frederick leads Gretzhoffen against Cortislaw at a palace siege, hidden artillery shifts momentum, and Frederick is wounded as Kitty Gray aides him. The royal reserves rally, the enemy falters, and Frederick proclaims victory with his troops advancing in triumph.
Newspaper woman Kitty Gray finds half a broken coin with Mutilated Inscription. At her editor's order she travels to Gretzhoffen to pursue the clue, hoping to piece out a mystery. She is loved and faces adventures as she chases the secret the coin suggests.
Roleau eludes capture and is detained by an officer before being held for safety as the battle near Grahoffen unfolds. Cortislaw, aging and defeated, laments a counterfeit coin scheme blamed for their rout, cursing Gretzhoffen as the supposed evil spirit behind their downfall.
Roleau escapes by sea after a failed coin secret. Count Sachio faces the king and a vanished cache as Cortislaw pursues. A royal yacht becomes Roleau’s unlikely escape route, funded by coins he dispenses, while tension mounts over who holds the true half of the treasure.
Count Sachie and Cortisian observe an aircraft raid over Gretzhoffen as their yacht sails away. The pursuing planes turn toward another boat, raising questions about who commands the hidden group and what the attack signifies for the royal party and their vessel.
