Marshal Bill Killed in Iowa Senate Vote
Des Moines March 21 The state marshal bill was killed in the senate with eighteen votes. Senator Dunham spoke for the measure while Senator Bleakly supported it but failed to rally enough votes. A. C. Rankin, its author, listened intently as petitions and club backing from temperance groups could not overcome local self-government concerns. Senator Warren opposed the bill citing risks of abuse and political corruption. He later proposed a separate bill to pressure counties to enforce liquor laws and even remove negligent attorneys.
